Kids can start weight training as soon as they show interest and have “the emotional and physical maturity to accept and follow directions,” usually around age 7 or 8, says Avery Faigenbaum, a professor of exercise science at the College of New Jersey and co-author of the American College of Sports Medicine’s statement on youth strength training.
